When I had the Montecarlo, I asked Lee at Classicar Automotive about the brakes.
He said if I kept the pipework as it was, I would need 2 servos.
But if I re piped it, I could just have the one servo.

I guess that was an S1 then as the S2 does away with the servo. I find it very odd that that is all they seem to have done.
Spent all day sorting little niggles and pipework and wiring and awkward nuts and bolts ! Bolting the power wire to the starter is one of the worst i have ever had to fight with. Hoping to fire it up on Tue . Then we will know if the engine is any good or not. A very fingers crossed day !

Well had a lot of fun since i last reported. The oil pump would not pump consistantly so one moment you would think all well and then its a lost cause.
Finally another pump has managed to get past our sovereignty and its a runner but only up to 2500 rpm.
Opening the throttle by hand on the carb makes no difference, the tank is new, there are no dirty filters to block it.
Its electronic ignition, lancia's own but cannot think what can be causing the problem.
On good news the Sud thats next to it has flown through its MOT and runs ever so well.

Maybe a problem with the secondary choke?

Yep we did that and thanks for the thought. Tend to feel that once its running and up to the 2500 rpm and then you add fuel directly into the carb, if it was the fuel starvation of any sort it would incease the revs.
Sadly it doesn't ! Most annoying.
Found that a firm called H&H ignition can test the whole ingnition set up if I take it to them,
so will talk to them in the morning. See if they still do it. Its a real two steps forward, one step back this car.

I presume your ignition system is original and 40 years old!
Accuspark and Powerspark do very reasonably priced electronic systems.
Lumenition more expensive.
Other systems mega expensive!

Does it have one of those rotor arms with a centrifugal limiter? I've known the springs to go weak and start ignition cut way too early.

That's where my mind went early on as I had the same with a Ducati once.
We now think the engine may have the wrong pulleys on the end of the cams !
This car is proving to be a pain in the arse. I should have just got another Sud.

Yep it is 40 yrs old as you say and it is a long time ! I wonder if anyone has tested the various systems back to back as very tricky to make a decision as which to go for.

I've used Accuspark for a few years on a Crossflow, and never had a problem.......
But I think Lumenition is very reliable, and has a long term good reputation.
Their marketing philosophy seems to be "think of a price and double it"
A guy in the Bristol area repairs and sells Lumenition stuff. Oddly, he also does thread repairs as well.

Off to H&H ignition in the morning to see what they can do. Not too far and they seem to have a good name.
Checked the valve clearance and camshaft pulleys and still not found a fault.
Ticks over smashing though so hopefully we did no damage when the oil pump failed.
The nice series 2 Sud is all done, bar the light is always on between the clocks for low brake fluid and if thats not on then the choke light is stuck on. The manual wiring diagram does not match up with the wiring so between that and the Monte our mechanic chum is getting hacked off.
So any thoughts on that would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think there were different crank pulleys fitted on early and late ones.
Could someone have fitted the wrong one?
Beta Boyz have them on their website. Maybe count the teeth to check?

Just counted....they both have 21 teeth, so I'm not sure why there are 2 types.

Hi. Thanks for your help. We double checked all the cam timing etc and felt it was correct. So I took the ignition the ingition to H&H ingnition solutions at Brierly Hill, Birmingham. Left it with them for an hour, came back, and they found the magnet under the pick up was the wrong way round. So happy to find a problem and yet later to feel so annoyed not to have spotted the fault.
Took it straight to Eric everything back on the car, a tiny bit of fiddling and its running very well. So it did not get damaged when we lost oil pressure, and all is well so far. very pleased. MOT today !
Oh yea and the cost of the testing and cable was £36. Bargin.

MOT passed, just had to add an extra rear fog light as it has the LHD one.
Very pleased. Now to see what difficulties the DVLA throw up as i try to get it registered for the road.

I feel your pain. I can extinguish mine pressing the bubble on top of the reservoir but it comes back on again. Have you checked pad wear sensor wiring?

Hi, thanks for that and yes we have but not getting anywhere at the moment.
Keep finding different workshop manual wiring diagrams but out of the three, none correspond to the car. Yet we are certain the car is original.
Wondering if the car alarm was badly fitted and there is a short somewhere.

Yes he is very proud and pleased with it in the nicest possible way and bought lunch for all of us who helped him locally.
Which was a good get together.
While we were there Eric was watching a twin cam Escort air box for £200 notes which i thought was a lot and he explained that he was watching it as they go for £600. An still not complete at that.
I am sticking to Italian stuff.

Hi Junior. They look a bit like the spring clips that hold the bulbs into headlights . Could be Alfa or Fiat as both marques used that style of clip.

Thanks for that, will look again to try to find a use for them. I feel sure they would be handy to someone.

No hassle from the DVLA ! Got a log book so just need to make up plates and I am on the road.
Very pleased. Have gone from worrying if it was a con to done and dusted legitimate, legal car.
Few worries along the way, and very pleased it has come good. Now to drive it and see if I like it !

Plates on finally. Free day so off in the Montecarlo. Went well after about 20 miles, but keeping it below 3000 rpm for the moment. The gear change is ponderous, the handling is good and it feels safe. Brakes are fine now it has done a few miles, but the handbrake suddenly acquired a load of slack on a steep hill in Malvern, which was worrying.
Have to say though, the Sud would blow this away. Aside from the Sud doesn't feel very safe

Well the Montecarlo is settling in quite well. The gear change has improved and the handling as well.
The gear change improvement was due to replacing a damaged flexible short hose to the slave cylinder.
It had quite deep rub marks and so either it had internal damage or was balloning and not lifting the clutch enough.
L.H. drive does mean you notice all the potholes all the while ! Surprised how much difference it makes.
