I'm looking for a gearbox in good condition to replace my whining one.
I've currently got a late Sprint Box with outboard discs, and cable speedo drive.
But anything decent considered!

I may well give mine up for an earlier close ratio if I can find one

Having a bad back, makes me reluctant to drop the whole unit and swap gearboxes any more!
I found a local enthusiast/mechanic with a pit. He will do the job for me by tilting the unit back, and just changing the gearbox.
He reckons 2 hours will be enough.
Some time back, decent engines and gearboxes were available from MoT failures.
Those have dried up now. But I'll keep on looking!

Can you do that safely?
I only fetched the engine out through the top once by doing what your suggesting and it was a nightmare.

Tilt the whole unit back. and drop the box out from below (in his pit).
Did it before at home.......but hard work to lift the gearbox back in when lying on the floor.....even with 2 of us!

Drop the whole engine and gearbox. I now have a hoist that makes it trivial but before that worked out a simple method using an engine hoist. You do have to get under the car to get to the gearbox mount but other than that you just unbolt the front cross member and the front gearbox mount. Use the engine hoist to lower the engine to the floor, then use the engine hoist to lift the car so you can slide the motor and gearbox out. easy peasy!

Have a look at "Alfasud Clutch Replacement" thread 06 April.
Different ways to do it.

The whine from my gearbox is getting worse!
Somebody has got a good one stashed away for a rainy day!

I'd be more tempted to just get that one rebuilt dave, any that you buy would only look at recouping the rebuild costs anyway and the chances of finding a good used one are slim to none..
At least you'd end up with a known quantity..

Got the replacement gearbox fitted, and all is ok, and quiet!
Interesting guy who sold it to me.
He runs a Business in March, Cambs, called Unit 7 Creations. Deals in pit equipment etc.
But also manages a racing team in The States.
In early August his driver was leading a race, then heavy rain fell, and he had a shunt with Juan Pablo Montoya's car.
Can't remember the name of the race series.

I've changed my gearbox from a late Sprint type.......to a late 33 type 907 one.
The gear linkage is different......and the gearchange does feel different.
1st and 2nd need the lever to be pushed quite firmly left........I have missed a gear a couple of times.
I suppose its biased to the Italian side......and is in better condition than my old one.
Maybe I should have replaced the bush where the linkage meets the selector shaft?
But not too difficult to do now, with the gearbox fitted.

Does any one have a Sud and a 33?
Same gearbox but different linkage.
First and second seem to need more than a normal push to the left on the 907 type late 33 box I've just fitted.
I keep trying to set off in third!
And trying to change down from third........to fourth!

What about bending the gear stick Dave, to bring it closer to you, - or have you got a left hand drive gear change mechanism ??
Cheers, John.
