Dear all! I'm considering changing my output flange seals and looking in the manual I need to lay my hands on the A.30298 puller to pull the ring of the back of the stub.
I guess it's unlikely that anyone has one for sale.... or hire.... it doesn't look that hard to make if someone could tell me the thread that I would need to cut into the tube the attach to the ring?
I have a press so if I can make or buy the tool I can do the job my self.
Failing that on considering options of places I could take my flange assemblies to to get the seals replaced on my behalf.
Any help or advice gratefully recieved.
Cheers
Pete

I have a leak coming from here also , are these big o ring seals? I've read and read Haynes book but can't see mention of a puller, but some housing spacers that are split and fall out, which sounds a bit worrying.

Stephen the split washers you speak of are to set the preload on the diff. If you remove the output shafts you MUST keep The washers in the correct place and refit them on the correct Side. You’ll also find washers under The caliper mounts that are the same thickness This is to ensure the calipers remain centred relative to the discs

Hi there is indeed a puller that removes a pressed on ring that retains the half shaft into the bearing.. there are 2 seals... an o ring and an actual oil seal..the.oring is around the bearing support housing as seals it to the gear box.. and the coil seal that stops oil leaking past the half shaft bearing and out onto brakes!
Google the number and I imagine you will find pictures... on the rhs the ring that needs pulling off retains the Speedo drive gear.
So far I have had no luck getting a tool... ironically I think I used to own it but swapped it with a crate of service tools for a few parts to Peter at alfasud spares on line.. I asked if I could buy it back but he can't find it apparently ( lesson here is to keep everything) so I think I will wait and get my seals and bearings swapped out by Sud shop.
As Ian is only in Dorset and not far from me. As Lou says the spacers behind the calipers are to position the calipers and also the shims that are fitted between the bearing carriers and the gearbox cases need to be carefully retained and put back where they came from.
I found on Google a guy in Australia who made a puller.... but while he detailed what he did the thread size needed to screw into the retaining ring he left out..... I found him on messenger and dropped him a line but no reply... and I think when you get into getting something made it's prob gonna be more than just paying for the time for someone with the tool to swap it over... there are four Allen key bolts that retain each bearing carrier... you need to remove the Speedo drive before the right hand one will come out.
I will prob replace my sump gasket at same time.. I have done a bit of R and D on a spare gearbox I have and have removed and replaced the half shafts... when you take both out together the diff drops out of position but you can just lift it up and refit one side then the other... if you can do one side at a time this would save you this slight pain....
Apparently if you just try and press half shaft out of bearing and retaining ring together you will break the bearing carriers......
Hope this helps.
Peter

Yes great description, I thought there must be a seal around the actual shaft what would be most like to leak ,damn. mines the left that's leaking, bought some rear discs off Peter and he's never found them apparently! Have to try these additives that swell the rubbers then!
Re: Alfa tool A.3.0298 for replacing gearbox hub seals
If you look up Ian Brookfields Sud shop he stocks the new seals and bearings....and as he has been around suds for so long he has the puller.... I would think other people are about who can change the seals too.... I have heard of cloverleaf transmissions? I think their in the north if that's closer to you?
I gave a slight bit of dampness around my drivers side half shaft on gearbox casing but as my sprint is 1983 the seals are 37 years old.
I just replaced the gear selector shaft seal and changed gearbox oil so I'm on a bit of a mission to keep the new oil in.... as I say it annoying that I had the tool and mistakenly parted with it.
I know everyone is busy but Peter is advertising tools for sale.... i can see the one i want in the picture.... i recognise many i used to own( i got the set from the local defunct alfa dealer but was short on space to keep them all) so it was beyond disappointing and frustrating when i eventually heard that "he didnt know where they are".....
I have a press..... and with the tool I could easily do the job at home..... anyway.... I will go to dorset with my half shafts in a backpack on my motorbike when the world gets back to normal..... although peter could have named his price really.... oh well what can you do.
Cheers
