New Race Project!
New Race Project!
Well, My body shell project car arrived on Christmas Eve, but I have just had a chance to look at it today.
There is no room at the inn at my place, and whilst my better half allows me to indulge myself she is not happy to have 'old' cars sitting outside the house, so it was a desperate challenge to get a garage rented before it arrived. Anyway found something very close which will do until I can clear some room and get it in the garage here.
Does anyone recognise it? Having checked the chassis number it appears to be a 1978 1.3ti - If anyone has any history it would be much appreciated? I think its been seen or mentioned on this forum before.
I have definitely bitten off more than I can chew, I have no experience of car restoration at all, not even basic mechanics! but I am very handy so I guess If I just take it one step at a time, and take my time I'll learn on the job!
It will be used for road (if i can get it registered), track days and hopefully race. I am currently considering two options:
1) 1.7 16v all modern equipment.
2) 1.3 as faithful as possible to the trofeo. (I'm not keen on "fakes" but If I can build it as close as possible and do a really good job, I feel there is merit in that).
Opinions on a postcard please?
Sorry I didn't get to the Christmas meet today, but will definitely come to MITCAR that I have seen mentioned on this forum - Bearing in mind I'm a beginner so it will take a bit longer than most I should have this car finished by then? !!! err I'll come in the Super.
Thanks to the forum members who helped me find it! and I hope everyone had a great Christmas, and wishing you all a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

Re: New Race Project!
I have an old photo of it racing in those colours, it was at that stage raced by Sue Bland (yep, a lady racer).
Shrew has more history on it.
If you do intend racing, then the spec you go for needs to be reflect the series you plan to enter. For example
Pre 83 touring cars (CTCRC) will need to be a 1500cc or smaller engine
HSCC 70's road sports similar to the above plus tax and mot
The CTCRC did have a pre 74 series, which a 1200cc engined Boot sud would just fit into, but I think pre 74 and pre 83 may now be merged.
You could race in the CSCC Future Classics or tin tops but both have some rapid cars and even a 16v would be lower on bhp than most (albeit a Sud would be very light compared to many cars in this series)
The top 2 have invitation classes for cars that don't suite meet the regs, but i'm sticking to a 1500 engine again to allow me to fit in with the general classic regs of the CTCRC or HSCC.
If just for road and track days, then you need to go for general drivability, a tuned 1300 or 1500 with big cams for race bhp would be hard to drive around town...

Re: New Race Project!
that's a car i had a few years back, it came from rodger the sprint racer from up scotland.
i bought it off him mainly for the roll cage which went into my old 16V sud, now shrews.
needs a fair amount of welding so you've got yourself a task there, not beyond saving by any means but will take lots of man hours to make strong again. i looked in the usual places and decided against using it as the S3 shell i had was better, although as i say, yours is far from the worst i've seen.
can't quite recall the owner when it was raced although colin wing rings a bell?

Veesix 75 - Kev JTD Thanks for the relies, If you happen to have that photo on your computer Veesix, I wouldn't mind a copy? Don't go to any trouble hunting it out though.
Yes Kev it does require a lot of work, but definitely saveable. Going to have a look over if properly at the weekend, but sills, inner wings, and a bit round the screen at first glance.
It is pretty much what I was expecting to be honest, better in some respects, worse in others! Shame its missing the cage!

Re: New Race Project!
Hi jon
Glad it all came together so far.
You've got all the photos and info I had in those emails I sent before jon, and good luck in finding more from its race days.
Speaking of which, I think you'll find Richard, Yorksud, has a sud cage for sale, you should drop him a pm sharpish!
Youll not be short of help and advice on here jon, practical too, if you need a bit of welding or fabricating help, just holla up jon
I like the sound of the trofeo, (who wouldnt!) But, undertaking a rep of that type, is a task and a half if you want it to be true to form.
The arches and splitter are easy, but proper rear spolier, original wheels, and absolutely any of the performance parts, jees louise! Unicorn poo would be easier!
A lose tribute, or a personalised nod at the theme like my own plan, is great and very achievable, but if you want to replicate it truly, be prepared for a very lengthy build and shopping list.
I'm guessing this is also a possible use of your extra short engine is it jon?

Re: New Race Project!
Well, Thanks for the replies guys.
I followed up on your mention of the cage Shrew, and have done a deal on that. Thanks for the Tip. Other interesting news is that I have sourced a 1.7 8v engine and 1.2 gearbox, condition unknown.
So the definitive plan - no going back! is to build a road / track car 1.7 8v, 1.2 box, inboard brakes standard Sud rear axle stripped out buckets and harness' with a visual Nod to the Trofeo. something like this:
I'll let you know when work begins!

Re: New Race Project!
Thanks for all the encouragement fellas, will need it.
Will do updates as work begins and progresses. Started on instruments tonight as I had a spare set of clocks so they are all being cleaned up. Ive got two sets actually so the blue background or the black background ones? Was it Black on the S2 Ti's? and Blue on the Super's?

Re: New Race Project!
Having spoke to Jon earlier, it sounds like a nice deal for all to get to the "nod" project, so well done both for starters.
The plan sounds solid and exciting, and i reckon youll end up with quite a series 2 (i think blue backed clock's, but could be wrong?)
You know where we all are Jon, just holla.
It'll add a touch of balance too, a good performance series 2 project amongst all these concourse series 1 resto's
I bet you cant wait to get cracking Jon

Re: New Race Project!
So thats it then Project Name "The Nod"
Just been out walking the Dog and all I could think about was welding! and a nice set of downdraft 40's. Think the welding is a priority - must chase up my pal who promised me his mig welder (No outstanding finance as far as I am aware!) and a quick lesson!
