Plastic gear drive on s3 sprint breaking

Post by STEVE5M »

Evening all. Nothing to report. My project won't start for a while but in the meantime I'm driving my sprint without a speedo. I have learnt that this is a common problem with the mechanical speedos. Has anyone found a problem to the plastic gear breaking? I have fitted 1 to the sprint and it broke almost straight away. I saw a thread somewhere where a bulk purchase of an all-metal gear drive was suggested. Has anyone heard anything about this or is there a solution to the problem?

When installing that gear, the car should be jacked up on the right side, so the wheel is off the ground.
That gear should just DROP in, so if you pushed it in, then most likely it was damaged on its way in.

You should gently squeeze it in if it doesnt drop in, and slightly turn the right wheel while you are doing that.
This way, the gear will slide through the groves on the gearbox drive.

Unless, it was just ready to break to begin with

Thanks for that guys.

The gear I had was used and had a hairline crack. I was advised to jack up the car and ease it in. It went in beautifully and worked for one journey. After that it stopped. When I removed the gear the plastic end was gone. The previous owner had also fitted one just before I purchased the car. His one broke too.

It is not a major problem but I wonder if the gearbox causing the problem?

Well it could if you've got the old pieces in the gearbox spinning around and round in there. why dont you take off that gear and clean things up ?
Good opportunity to change your gear oil as well ;)

Morning all

I didnt get the brass speedo drives done in the end. At the time there wasnt a lot of interest and the cost was more than I would have liked. From memory it was going to work out about £80 each if I had twenty made and I couldnt afford that.

I can remember someone saying from Australia they had had some made in metal. There was also concern about whether metal was appropriate because if it came off the gearbox would be damaged

If there was enough interest I could look at it again.
