Locks frozen.

Door locks frozen on the 145 luckily the hatch still opened so climbed through. Do all our cars suffer the same?

it is a concern for many many motors eh Tony, but heres a little tip that can help sometimes.

once you have them thoroughly thawed and fully operational, try a bit of Silkopen spray in there, or a motorcycle chain lube.

most folk waste a can of wd40 only to have it dribbling down the door, staining the paint, and the morning after its frozen again!


you need something that will hang around, and not evaporate away shortly after contact with the air!



Silkopen is great stuff by the way, using graphite to "roll" lubricate things in a liquid solution, it works quite differently to wd and other penetrating fluids, and can lubricate for far far longer periods.

Brilliant for mechanisms and cables etc etc, which is where i came across it from the bike game years ago, very highly recommended

Only got ptfe lube at the moment, will try that 2moro. Ta

Ptfe is another good idea Tony, at least it has something that will hang around rather than dissappear faster than a white Christmas!

Wd40 is about the worse thing you can spray in locks it washes all the grease out we get lots of customers who free there locks and ignition switches with wd40 and make them stiffer When the wd40 drys out I find the best thing to do is put grease on the key and keep pushing the grease in with the key then clean excess grease off and your good to go

I always use spray grease in them. But have only just got the 145 20vt on the road and I'm just about to fit another set of locks with a key that i can swop the chip other

another good idea is to spray the rubber door seals with silicon lubricant, available in aerosol form from most places. this prevents the moisture building up and freezing to the door once the latch undoes

Was about to suggest the same Kev .. i learnt that trick a few years back on my trips down Holbeach .. and it does work!

We have had a few bad morning in Sheffield and locks frozen solid on my car .. in fact i couldnt even get the key in the lock, let alone turn it.

I think we should park old Suds in desert areas, NOTHING attracts more water.... we could solve drought!
