Black/White rides again!

Post by PETROLHEAD »

Yesterday i was clearing out and tidying the bottom garage out, and found a Sud!

 that would have been the ebay line wouldnt it! Ha ha!

Its kinda true, the garage is a lot tidier, but is now home to the 16v sud instead of my old black/white S3 Ti i bought from Justin some years ago.

Its going to a new home this morning, via Kev, who is going to be restoring it to former glory, although i doubt it will keep its current colour scheme, which it has had for many many years.

I have to say, the paintjob grew on me and i began to like it, and it was done pretty well too really, but body work is in need of a thorough tidy up if shes going to do another 30 years, so off she goes, and it is by far the best plan for her.

Cheerio, bon voyage, Ciao.....

there will be a build thread once the details are sorted.
at the moment it will be a project for john and his helpers bob & andy who've done a cracking job on johns' cars in the past. over the years they've done a lot of suds so this one will in no way daunt them.
rumour has it i may do an engine for it but that's all to be discussed.

for now though i had a pleasant :? afternoon swapping over the rear axle, springs & shocks etc as they are konis' etc and still shrews....part of the original deal....i wasn't going to need them but that's another story.

john is coming over tomorrow morning to have a look at it and we will see from there what happens.

things have taken an unforseen turn.

a difference of opinion between john and his long standing friends who had previously done cars for him has resulted in the sud being unable to be repaired as was hoped.

the fact that there was (inevitably with a sud) more rust and rot than was first thought hasn't helped, but it's in no way terminal from what has been described to me.

i hope to go see the car tomorrow night.

the bulkhead under the battery and brake servo is said to have holes, fully believable as looked a little grotty, but in no way a difficult area to repair.

the sill covers have been removed and the outer sills have been perviously lashed up with bonder etc so will need replacing properly, again not a game changer.

drivers rear arch we knew about, so no surprise about that needing replacing inner and outer.

good news though is the hatch is THE BEST i've seen in years, incredibly good.

doors are also rot free and in superb condition, need nothing doing.

screen surround looks great although we've had no call to poke at it, certainly no blistering evident.

wings are fine, odd mark and small dent but perfectly useable.

bonnet is good, hardly any marks along the front edge inside or out, a coupel of shallow dents where it's probably been closed on soemthing sat on the heater box at some point. again, perfectly useable.

car has many other great features,
a brilliant set of Ti lights, all good with hardly a blemish on the reflectors
good front screen,
good black carpet,
good dash with no splits,
electric windows,
good radiator etc etc

so the options open to john and me are;

1/ break the car for spares

2/ weld it up myself with johns help

3/ sell the car on as a project

option 1 would be a crying shame, it's far from too far gone to save.

option 2 is as always, time and space dependant

option 3 makes sense, if anyone is interested?

...... Not the first time this has happened.... these cars are a bit different to welding new strut tops on a mk2 Capri!! :)
Shame to break it like you say but with it being a 3 door shell which could be made into a race shell easier and cheaper than a smart road car, and also with it having lot of good parts on it as you say it may be a favoured option, all depends how much time it needs if the owner can't do the welding himself I guess.

well it seems there was an option 4.

a change of heart has seen that john and his 2 helpers are willing to do the sud after all 8-)

the sill rot wasn't as bad as first feared i'm told, only the last 9" or so near the rotten wheel arch.

fingers crossed the car will survive 8-)

Its a relief for sure, and i have to say, i couldn't help feel a little personally responsible, but then its has been off the road 3 years come this september, so you kind of forget a thing or two, and things change too of course.

that said, if worst came to the worst, i'd buy it back in a heart beat (given the funding!)

that car was very good to me, i loved it, still do, so i am very pleased that the ludford lads have got a grip, and will crack on with it afterall.

she will ride again i'm sure, and i hope for johns sake, that he can enjoy it even half as much as i did, as it was a great sud.

I can't believe within 2 months I own a very rusty silver ti cloverleaf, black ti cloverleaf which I want to get on the road ASAP and then do a resto on the Black and White Sud with 1.7 plus some other mod's. I'm going to use the silver Sud as a spares car then will see what's left on it.

Kinda glad you see it panning out that way Chris, although it is up to you of course, but the black and white certainly deserves to be on the road again in a good solid form.

1.7 is a no brainer for me too, unless going for a concours, it will make the car a lot more modern in its pace, with no detrements other than originality, which again, doesn't bohte rme none too much with this kind of prioject.

you'll love it mate, she'll be a cracker again i'm sure :D
