That is a bonded type screen you can tell from the stainless trim surround, so the earliest type. I can see it also has the later tailpipe from 1977 with the bend at the outlet. I have noticed something about your old car though.... and that was the chrome/stainless door window uprights?.... all other early cars I had owned and seen have been black?! so something else that changed during production for a while unless these were used on some saloons while Ti's had black ones, unsure.... :?

specs and details are not easy to pin exactly down, and then it's not easy to find all the parts to recreate them.
i'm happy with the seal i've got now, will retain a certain amount of period detail with the 11mm chrome insert and also have the ease of fitting and replacing if needed.
and if i decide in the future that i really need to change to a bonded type with the wider chrome strip then it can be changed


re the window runner uprights, the ti cars in the '76 brochure i have which covers the ti and 5M cars shows the ti having black uprights and the 5M having chrome ones, so think that Ians car is correct

don't know about being ready first..........but now the running gear is back in and with this weekends finds it does seem to have stepped up a bit :)

My 5M was only 5 years old in the picture, the only mods it had was 185 tyres fitted to the standard rims. You can see the rust was setting in already.

Think your plan is sound Kev, swapping a bonded screen is grief you don't need!

not a lot to report again, dragging my heels on this one that's for sure.

must up the workrate a tad :roll:

anyway, spent best part of 2 hours cleaning the windscreen seal in the week, years of people stuffing sealant into it to try and cure leaks took an age to clean off :(

so with that ready i cleaned the 'screen itself and with robs' help we fitted it in. fits just nice, so another confirmation that rubber seals will fit an S1 sud :D
still got to get the chrome (plastic) insert for the seal, woolies don't open weekends so will have to pay a little extra and get postie to do his job.

the drivers door also got it's glass in place, freshly lubed window regulator, some fresh plastic sheeting to protect the doorcards etc.
car now just needs the rear window and then it's about watertight save for things like wiper arms.

the wiring loom is in place and most stuff is connected so thought i'd fit the dash in place that rob cleaned the other day. will need to come out again once i've had the engine running so i know what mods or repairs the wiring loom will need, and to tidy it all up a bit.
just couldn't help seeing how well it looks.
took the clocks apart too to clean them up and put the rev counter needle back on.
found what i think is the correct S1 controls, will check that one with john tomorrow if he pops over. i have 3 or 4 of the earlier stainless levered contol sets but noticed that all but one had a button on the end for the windscreen washers. i have an S2 ti manual so looked in there and it shows a button on the wiper stalk, so assumed that most of what i had were S2 ones.....anyone confirm this? the ones i've fitted don't have a button on the end of the wiper control arm, not sure how the wipers are operated but does make a connection when the arm is pulled towards the steering wheel so assume that is it?


sorted through my headlight collection and found 2 decent metal backing plates and almost an as new set of lights. drivers side dip beam though will have to be a used one that will get refreshed. i have another near new n/s one but the fixings are handed......sods law. could cut/swap/bond the mounts but don't want to risk wrecking a good unit.
if anyone has a drivers side outer (dipped, with sidelight) headlight for sale, or need another one for swap, then please get in touch ;)

Hi Kev,
Ref: Wiper switch, series 1 cars did have the button on the end although some didn't and work by pulling it towards you like you say, the series 1 handbooks & sale brochures show the button on some of the dashboard photos but my car a '76 like yours doesn't have one, another grey area :roll: so many differences on these cars! you'll soon know if its right to the wiring loom when you connect a battery :D

I thought that the switch activated by pulling the wiper stalk forward was the hooter?

hmn, just had a look in my 5m/Ti brochure and it has the button. but if your '76 car also had no button vechhio then guess mine could also be like that1
suppose once i get some leccy down the lines and try things i will know which sort i need :D

Button operates window washer pump. Pull stalk towards you for horn, simple.

ah, but the set i've got doesn't have a button on the end of the wiper stalk :D

i do have sets that have the button though, as featured in the period brochures so will most likely end up changing them ;)

Hi Kev,
I think I may have got to the bottom of this, looking at the wiring diagrams in the Haynes book it shows series 1 Ti models as having an electric washer pump (as we know, fastened to the washer fluid bag) but early series 1 saloons show as having no electric washer pump?! (hence no switch on the end of the stalk!), the wiring diagrams on pages 104-109 Fig: 9.17 / 9.18 / 9.19 show this with the washer pump on the Ti's being shown as key no. 23 and nothing on the early saloons (9 wires to the R/H side of the TI switch & 8 on the saloons). I can only presume early saloons had a manual pump on the floor or dash, having never owned an early series 1 saloon I am unable to confirm this..... anyone know or remember? the horn must be the same on all cars - pull to operate as dralf says
So the upshot seems to be that all Ti's should have the switch, which means someone has done a bodge job on my car.... not for the first time :roll: which I will have to sort out when I get to that stage........ hopefully this is an explanation anyway.... :)

no update yesterday as i got a whole lot of nothing done.

started off with good intensions of putting some bits on the back end to at least fake some progress

bumper, eventually found a decent one but needed cleaning, forget it for now.

rear spolier set, found my "set" which turned out to have 2 right side corner pieces instead of a pair! forget that one.

found a decent pair of lights, but didn't want to fit those until the spoiler is on to help with fitting that, forget it again.

rear alfasud emblem could be fitted, but needed polishing and i'd given rob the last of my autosol to polish his schwinn bike a while back.....yep, forget that one too.


so had to do something :roll:

fitted the new bearings to my new rear discs and fitted them. something achieved at last :D

john popped around and after the day of near misses i'd had i didn't need much persuading to go for a ride to see the parts stash to look if we had another spoiler corner.
luckily enough we found a left side spoiler trim, needs a little repair but will do just fine.
we also dug out some more spares that will be needed soon, heater air scoop and a bundle of cables amongst them.


so tonight i thought i'd better make use of the autosol metal polish that the mrs had got today.

started off with one bumper, took some elbow grease to get the years of crud off but came up pretty well.

next one was the drivers door mirror which wasn't too bad but looked a bit dull, really pleased with how well it's come up 8-)

so while i was at it i did the other bumper. saves having it to look forward to doing tomorrow night :)

cleaned and painted the mounting irons so once that's baked off they can be fitted at the weekend. will give the indicators and rear number plate lampa good clean up too before they go on.


determined to do a few jobs this week in the evenings so i have no excuses this weekend to actually make some progress.........time will tell :D

Yes patience is needed at this stage, so tempting to rush things.... but you are definitely going about this the right way. As we all know 1 job can often have a knock on effect and stop 4 or 5 jobs being done......

steady midweek progress continues....

spent a couple of hours tonight stripping a pair of headlight backing panels, then stripping off a 2mm or so thick layer of underseal off them. good in a way though, saved them from rusting through! very messy job though.

etch primed them ready to paint tomorrow night.

the one light that i don't yet have a new one for also got a quick sand down, and etched.

windscreen chrome strip arrived today so that can go in at the weekend.

thanks for the offer of parts Jan, i'll let you know if i struggle for bits, which ,may well happen as the build goes along!!

my lights should be ok for now thouhg, the remanining headlight i managed to get to an ok condition for now ;)

with all the activity in the week cleaning parts and getting them ready i hoped this afternoon would produce some results 8-)


first job was to fit the windcsreen "chrome" (plastic) insert into the screen surround. went in really nicely with the little tool. corners went nice and smooth despite me wondering if they'd be easy or not.
really happy with the result of that little job, gave a bit of bling to the seal 8-)

next job was the fitting of the rear bumper with it's new rear number plate lamp that came with the car.
added an earth wire too so it doesn't rely on the bumper making an earth.

put a piece of neoprene between the body mounts too to stop any chafing, don't want the fresh paint chipping off!

next task was the rear spolier set. n/s corner piece freshly repaired, doesn't look too bad but will keep my eye out for a mint one.

used rubber O ring washers under each fitting to try and stop any water getting in.....

front bumper fitted with new indicator units, earth wire added like the rear number plate unit.

rear light units i'd already cleaned up, so they were fitted to add a bit of colour.

alfasud badge finished the afternoon off just nicely.

great when you can put a load of parts on in one go, really makes it feel like you've done something!! :D


a warm afternoon which got a visitor to watch over me and cool down a little :)

got a few more little jobs done.

built up the headight units yesterday, all now ready to go in the car. nice to know i will be able to adjust them easily once on the car :D

stripped the heater box apart yesterday too and cleaned a LOT of crud from the casing, years of use followed by even more years in storage had built up quite a layer of dust and debris.

if you've ever wondered what the inside of the heater box looks like here's some exploded views. my cat keeping an ever watchful eye on things :D

also has been pointed out to me by john that i should have a ti badge for the boot too........... :roll:

Only a few early cars, P or N reg, had the Ti script on the boot. For some reason they then dropped this and just had an Alfasud script on the boot and added the Ti stickers to the C post to cover the, often, dreadful join between the roof and the wing. If your car had the early Ti script then the boot ( assuming it has the original boot) will have the holes drilled for it.

Yes! That rings a bell, and explains why I couldn't remember removing the ti script. Also, the car definitely did have the stick-on ti badges at the top of the c pillar. (We had some made up for when the car was finished, and they seem to have lasted well). I'm looking forward to my pre-ordained test drive in, er, six weeks or so.....

that's a reflief then, mine being a late '76 R plate car then it wouldn't have had the ti badge on the rear?
only reference i had was the brochures but seems even those aren't reliable enough when it comes to when the car was built!

i've defo got the rear 1/4 pillar stickers J, another nice thing that can be added to the car, maybe this weekend......................anyone know the exact measurement of where/how far down the pillar they should go?
know they were to cover the seam but mine hasn't got the seams on show....
