New Sud, 20 years Unrun!
Now this isn't supposed to be taken too seriously, but there is a nice tale to it eventually.
Travelling around as i do, i picked up this late Ti Cloverleaf today.
Sadly, it wasn't as good as hoped, but you can't win them all.
Savable? You'd have to be brave or silly, maybe a combination of both, but in essence, yes, believe it or not.
Interestingly, the cars condition, and the tax disc etc supported a slightly different version to that over the phone, but we came to an agreement all the same, and i came away with yet another Sud Ti.
As is usual, i like a challenge, but to know just how wisely i'd invested in this poor old thing, i needed to know whether the motor was seized, or indeed any good or value at all.
having just sold a Ti Engine with carbs, for £400 to a beetle based beach buggy owner, that sort of thing would make the whole experience and mileage all worth while again, so, armed with the usual pikey parafanalia. i'e' a battery three times bigger than it should be and some easy start, we turned her over.
She was reluctant, mainly due to a seized alternator, so we disconnected the belt, and tried again.
Free as a bird (oil checked previously of course!)
No noises, no knocks, or bangs, so on to phase 2
Airbox lid off, revealed the remnents of the various wildlife the car has been home too in the past 19 years or more, a squirt of easy start to match the fuel that was beginning to find its way into the leaky carb feed lines, and try again,
She Lives!!!!!!
The very first time she stood half a chance of starting, she did so, instantly!
Unbelievable!
Even better, she actually sounds really sweet, and apart from the fact that there is virtually no exhaust manifold left to speak off, she settles down to a steady tickover that resembles a very healthy little unit indeed!
Bingo! Everyones a winner!
Enjoy...

we're way ahead of you mate, had been discussed in the week
if it was as good as described then it may have been feasible, although i still have the same time constraints that prevented me from taking on 2 tone.
speaking to shrew ealier today it seemed the car was in a very poor state, and so it seems. just seen the vid. reminds me of vjm.

Nice find mate!!
I think she's blowing at the manifold though!
As we know anything is restorable, its just how much time it will take, as these cars get more rare and valuable something like this becomes more 'do-able' but there is a lot of work visable and twice as much hidden for sure
This is what happens if an alfasud is left outside....
Nice to see the prospect of another Ti being saved, ....tip top mate

Re: New Sud, 20 years Unrun!
ha ha!
getting her running was the easy bit!
I'm not entirely phased by it personally, they're all pretty much the same work to be honest.
The old P4 needed just the same floor/sill/arch work, that all got done,
VJM was a similar state all round if i recall Kev, and look how that turned out,
so as Vecchio quite rightly says, it all doable with enough time, and ability. More of those two things than anything else, including budget in my opinion, as most of it would be fabricated parts rather than purchased panels anyway.
If anyone fancies the challenge, i only bought it to save it or help another sud back on its wheels.
all offers welcome, although Taffioch has first dibs

Are the floors and rear suspension mounting points as bad? if they are it may be not worth doing because as we all know there will be twice as much as you can see hidden
Re: New Sud, 20 years Unrun!
it is bad mate, very bad really.
not beyond saving, but beyond sensible saving?
depends on how you look at it.
welding is welding, just this one needs a lot of it.

Being a Ti its a shame to see it broken up but if its that bad then .......
Maybe be best to store it up for now and wait to see if a better 2-door shell turns up, an SC, and make one from 2 cars, seems the best way out of it to me with values going up especially Ti's.....
We were talking about car ringing last night after all.......
Re: New Sud, 20 years Unrun!
it's not beyond saving mate and with prices going up it may even become financialyl viable in time to come.
i'll leave it to shrew to decide what happens to it, not my car so not for me to decide if it gets saved or not.
the rear though isn't half as bad as the front which makes us think it's been stored somewhere damp at the front end, like a dyke

Re: New Sud, 20 years Unrun!
Hi all
well, current situation is that Taffioch would like to let me know sometime tomorrow what he decides.
i get the impression that he's hankering for a ti cloverleaf to restore, and i can see why, with prices finally starting to hike, we'll all have to take what we can get and start somewhere.
as Kev says, welding is welding, and as ive always said a big panel is the same as a small panel, sometimes easier to be honest, so really imagination and time are the only constraints on any project this age i guess.
Chris, i'll contact you the moment i know from taffioch what his feelings are, next refusal guaranteed, i promise.

Sorry no I haven't
TBH Shrew I don't know why kev doesn't make a jig up and knock these out to John and Peter, instead of doing "one off's" all the time

Re: New Sud, 20 years Unrun!
Thats the sort of conversation that has happened many times already to be honest H, and maybe with car prices finally on the up, if folk see suds,sprints,33's as practical classics a little more now, the possibility for parts supply becomes a little different too.
i imagine those conversations will repeated a few more times yet though.
Jiohn at just suds has a contact that has pressed stuff out lime sills before i'm sure, maybe wing rails too, but if the numbers don't stack up, these parts just die off.
I've suffered the same thing myself, with various exhaust, intercooler pipe projects etc, without enough take up , they remain a bespoke part, never destined to make the mass production level sadly, its a viscious circle!

I have an 8v crossmember if you don't fancy patching the original up..
It may be an idea to post all parts required as there could be other stuff that other forum members have in their sheds.
Cheers,
Adam

Re: New Sud, 20 years Unrun!
and just like that the sud is saved!
mission accomplished!
well done Chris for taking up the challenge, quite rightly understanding as we have been saying recently, that you have to start with something, and cheap choices are limited, particularly in a Ti QV!
Good idea Adam about the parts list, i'll have a good look around at what i can include anyway, and Chris can tell us what he's short of after that i guess.
Nothing happening imminently as far as a rebuild thread i should think, as we're aiming for a delivery over the next week or so i think, when Chris has shuffled his already busy driveway and workshop around! ha ha!
Good work lads, this is what a forum should be about eh!
