also meant to get the n/s/r window fitted as i had bonded the glass back into place last week, cleaned the seal up and fitted the freshly painted retaining strips......anyone spot the obvious flaw to my plan

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
only thing you have to mind with the aerosol glue i used for the roof lining is it's very stringy and if there is a strong wind (like there is most days down my wind tunnel/driveway) then the overspray blows everwhere, usually onto the nice shiny paint
luckily it is still nice and smooth so polishes out very easily

dunno about doing another one mate, they are a real PITA to do. took me about 3 solid days of cutting, glueing and general fretting over things.
the S3 card one is a much better idea

more pics?

thought i was cleaning and removing the years of old sealant from the n/s seal but got a surprise when i went to fit it

wanted to get that window bolted into the car as it's been sat in my shed for a week and i'm terrified of damaging it as it's been painted

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
another saturday, a bit more done.
first off i had to repiar one sheared fixing from the rear edge of the webasto roof, takign care not to drill straight through the whole thing!
precautions were made so was a success
got the rear side windows in too with rob's help, got to get him involved when i can
cars always look better once a bit of contrast starts to creep in even if it's just windows seals and the odd bit of chrome.
this is by far the nicest stage of a rebuild, i am SO thankful of all the hard work having been done before i got it
next job was to finish off the fuel tank, replace the rubber fuel pipe, check the tank sender and run some wires. i have purposely made the wires extra long, all 3 of them, so they can be fastened inside the car to save on the struggle of trying to connect them up while balancing the tank.
took the back axle out then so a bit more space can be regained in the shed, the new and freshly painted axle has been getting in my way for a while!
while the axle was out i fitted a new rear brake compensator, a new one came with the car so rude not to
up with the tank next complete with refurbished straps
then the axle went up although i've still to decide on which shocks to use so it went on with the worst pair i have.
also need to find the rubber insulating pads that sit on top of the springs so those 2 ittle jobs can wait for a while.

Looks great Kev, coming on a treat.
Was the roof a factory fit or an aftermarket job? it looks good and different
You must have the only new brake comp. valve in the UK!

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
roof is a webasto one mate.
still has the logo on the closing mechanism, websato of birmingham or something like that
not sure if it was fitted from new or somewhere down the line, would have been done while in UK though i guess.
folds back lovely though, ruddy great big opening. should be great for the summer, but probably next summer
comp valve is a new old stock genuine alfa one, car came with quite a few rare bits and bobs still in alfa boxes

Wow Kev! What a fantastic job and a fantastic car!
S1 TI's are always my favourite.
My first one had a Webasto sunroof and I loved it.
I don't remember it leaking.
I drove through France in it with the roof wide open and the back windows open - it was fantastic.
Brown as a berry when I got there!
Can't wait to see it in the flesh Kev.
Brilliant work as always!

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
didn't plan on doing anything much else to the sud this weekend, don't want it to occupy all my spare time or put any deadlines on it being done. if it's done this year then great, but most likely it won't be.
but a few spare hours this afternoon allowed me to catch up a little with parts finding and generally tidying the shed. i am a tad messy
good news was i found a good pair of rubber insulaters for above the rear springs so that's a relief.
next choice was to decide which rear shocks to use.
i have a full set of red konis but also a pair of original alfa spica labelled ones with a race helmet emblem on them. not sure if they are uprated or not but they are in decent order. also they are inveretd unlike the konis so a little less unsprung weight, not that it will make a huge difference with the heavy sud axle!
so as the rear suspension stuff is ready to go on i thought i'd better sort the fuel filler kneck so that can go on at the same time.
we already had found a decent looking one but it was covered old underseal and dust but thankfully it has cleaned up very well, no holes or dodgy bits with it being metal unlike the later plastic ones.
once cleaned though i had intended on painting it but as it looked so good i just lacquered it, looks more like an alloy than pure steel which being bare on the inside and no sign of rust i guess it must be an alloy of some sort.
a steering rack was selected from my collection, cleaned and painted any bits as needed. gaitors are all in superb condition so it's ready to go on too.
whilst sorting a pair of steering arms (which i then realsied i didn't need, is a good apir on the car already...
) i found that there are in fact 3 different sizes of inner bushes not 2 as i have always thought.
the sud ones are small and the power steering rack ones (33) are bigger
i then noticed that a pair looked slightly bigger than the sud ones but not as big as the 33 ones, so out with the calipers
the sud ones have 10mm bore size and the 33 power steering arms have a 12.5mm bush but the other ones are 11mm, maybe a sprint or something?
never stop learning new things about these cars
some pics but nothing special
thanks for all the votes of confidence guys

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
Kev, I have a question mate about the air vents on the 'c' posts, I can see yours are black, mine are as well, but some series 1 cars seem have them painted in body colour according to brochures and photos of the time, do you know what cars had what, black or body colour? or does anyone else know?....

hmn, not noticed that before.
will have a look at what brochures i have although they will most likely be the same brochures as you!
just looked in the david owens book and even though the pics aren't colour they aren't colour coded, look dark/black.
all the spare metal ones i have are also black too....so i did mine with stain black too.
never occured to me about them being colour coded to be honest
did notice one pic of a 5M though where they didn't look so obviously different on what looked like a red car, maybe the ti's were black and other models were colour coded?

On my S1 yellow Sud 5M they were body colour, on my blue S2 Ti they were black satin.
looking at various on-line pics, it seems early base model saloons the vents were body colour, but on all the Ti's they seem to be black

that bears out with what i thought, seen pics of the 5M and they looked body coloured.
found a brochure fro the S1 ti too and it shows a red car with black side vents.

It sure does.... more knowledge shared

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
bought one of these brochures, arrived yesterday.
covers the 5m and Ti models.
100% confirms the 5m had colour coded rear vents and the Ti had black ones

i also noted something else i'd got wrong.
the front door window guides i had painted in the body colour, they should be black

few more little jobs done, ticking along.
couple of them thanks to justsuds john bringing me some goodies, thanks again mate
at least it's easier and cleaner to open the doors now instead of poking your finger into the lock
had to drill out the lock on the fuel cap, no key. will cover it over with something suitable in time
correct shocks and rubber blocks above the rear springs fitted, fuel filler kneck on, fuel flap on which saves me dodging around it in the shed, steering rack changed, doors and sills waxoyled.
little steps but we're getting there

Looking good mate, a few more jobs done.....
At least that window upright needs to go to black from body colour, it would be worse if was the other way round as you would be needing no get paint mixed up again...
You should be able to locate a new old stock aftermarket locking fuel cap off ebay Italy as they fit other makes and models of the period, I think I picked up a period chrome or stainless one up off there for not much money, seem to remember about £20 odd.

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
window uprights are now black, shame as they'd been painted already in body colour but they needed to be black.
just sorting through a few bits and bobs for the next stages of the build.
peddle box i picked up out of the stock is the wrong one, no accelerator pedal mount on it. no worries, will collect another next time i'm up there.
had a call from tom this week, gearbox appears to be in good health but i've asked him to give it the works, change anything that needs doing.
with that in mind i had a look at the clutch that's on the engine.
doesn't look bad condition wise, measured well within wear limts so could be used.
compared it against a good spare i have which was actually slightly better wear wise.
but, the one with the engine is a 180mm diameter
my spare is the more normal 200mm diameter.
so the question is, less mass of the original diameter to keep it rev happy (marginal diference, i know), or bigger diameter for longer lasting/more resistance to slip
