Lancia Flavia

Just happened to be looking at pics of a Lancia Flavia engine and gearbox set up.
Designed in the 50's and bears a very close resemblance to the sud set up.

Nothing new in this world I suppose?

Many times not.

I used to have a 1980's Moto Guzzi motorcycle which had linked front and rear brakes, which they claimed was a first.

Then I had a 1936 Rudge Ulster which had linked brakes..., which they claimed was a first.

Then I also acquired a 1930 Gillet 500 from Belgium which had .....

I have often wondered if they had it right.

Jowett also used a flat four.

As for bikes, the RD125 / 250 LC's seemed so up to the minute.......until I watched classic bike racing and a water cooled Scott from the 1920's thrashed everyone on track.

I think the Scott was considered one of the first production motorcycles to officially break 100 mph.

The Flavia has some really nice details, way ahead of the majority of contemporary cars.
My later 2000 Sedan has 5 speed dogleg gearbox, power steering, discs all round with 4 pots up front, loads of items that other cars couldn't have or weren't standard.
One day I'll restore it and use it, complete with the wrap around rear curtains!
Also got a Flavia coupe to have a look at next year..

Interesting that Jowett and Scott were both from Bradford.
Maybe they used to talk to each other?

Bradford Industrial Museum has some Jowett cars, but not sure about Scott bikes.

Yes but was the Flavia engine belt or chain drive camshafts!

An odd situation with the Flavia flat 4, from the timing diagrams it looks like twin cam...but pushrod. One cam per bank above the crankshaft, run on a pair of chains. I'll know more once I get around to looking at mine!
