performance cams

Post by jobeed »

Hi folks, can anyone give me a clue here please?

I'm building a 1.7 8v engine it's an i.e so hydraulic tappets, but I'm changing it to mechanical tappets. Anyway I have found some cams, which I have been told are 300 deg duration and 11.2 lift. I have done a little bit of googling, and established that these look to equate to a full race profile, would you agree or disagree please? I am looking for fast road / occasional race. Not a full race profile.

Any ideas please?

Hi thanks for that, it echoes what I have found, and suggests they will be a bit too hot for my intended use on balance. Also interestingly enough for an extra couple of hundred pounds I can get brand new c and b cams. So think I will save some pennies and go down that route.

Can I ask what is involved in converting to mechanical tappets?

Hi amichie,

The simplest way is to get hold of a complete set of heads with cam boxes, cams etc off a mech tappet engine, you can use the existing heads but need to change the valves, probably springs, then tappets obviously and cam boxes and cams.

I have a massed quite a few various parts, and am going to use the heads of the I.e although they have a strange cut out int the intake port. I have valves / springs which are good off a mech tapp engine, I have cam boxes, am looking at uprated cams, then just need new tappets and cambox covers - simples!

Also I have never done this before so there may be something I have missed, hopefully will find out before I put it all together and turn the key!

If you are going with hot cam eg 300* you need to get some materiel off the camhouse. Otherwise you can not adjust the valves to specs. That's what i have been told anyway. Please correct me If I'm wrong :)
