Half shaft oil seals

changed the gearbox oil but when i went the next day it has leaked from the speedo side shaft. I have the oil seal but but i cant get the half shaft out
im i missing somethaing ? tried to take out the speedo drive out aswell wont budge any tips? :D

Speedo drives can be very difficult to get out, my last resort is to tack weld a nut to the top face and then attach a side hammer to pull it out. I think you might need a special tool to remove the drive flange though.

Correctamundo! There is a threaded bush pressed onto the halfshaft to retain the outer bearing in the housing (Haynes calls it an "oil thrower"). You need the special tool that screws onto the bush to remove it. It is an interference fit.

I believe the same tool is required to work on the Alfetta gearbox, Alex Jupe did mine for me (although I'm not sure he pressed one of the bushes fully home, which was a source of great consternation for a while!).

Speedo drives can be a nightmare, the steel body corrodes into the gearbox casing. Attempting to drill out the drive was the reason I had to source a replacement gearbox in the first place... :roll:
