Winter Warmer, 29th December

I am proposing a little mini meet for those of us who find Christmas OK....to a point, then it just drags on....and on....and on...

There is a fantastic Fish & Chip restaurant at Ollerton that has the best Fish I've had from any chippy, anywhere including some so called award winning places.
Close to Clumber Park, Rufford Park, Sherwood Forest with The Major Oak etc so handy to have a little ride out with the family/other half etc.

So, is anyone up for a taste of the best British meal instead of leftover Turkey wings and stale Brussel Sprouts?
I have checked with The Big Fish and they are indeed open in the week between Xmas and New Year so am thinking of going over on the Monday 29th December, anyone else fancy it?
We can either meet up there first then go to any of the suggested venues, I'm easy as have been to them all and they're perfect to walk off the meal :) If the weather is kind, dry and crisp then it will make for a nice day out.
They are open from 11am to 10pm so maybe a meet at Rufford/Clumber or Sherwood then have the meal afterwards?

This is The Big Fish, I've been many times and know Shrew has too, infact he introduced me to the place!

They have a Licensced bar so if you fancy a Guiness instead of Tea then that's available. A very nice, large Restaurant that seats around 80 so should be able to get us all in however many want to turn up. They have some great Fish dishes, Seafood Platter being one of my favs with a Huge piece of Fish along with a decent portion of Scampi etc, plus a mountain of chips & salad....you get the picture :)
Skeggy seaside greasy chippy it ain't ;)

Ollerton is within easy reach of the A1 situated to the NE of Newark in the Newark/Mansfield/Worksop triangle.

Plan is to have a trial run this winter, see what suits, then plan on having a more organised run out in the Summer when folks can bring their Classics out with Sunny dry days.

Goes without saying, owning/coming in an Alfa isn't mandatory for this Winter Warmer ;)

Anyone fancy it?

Never a truer word mate!

By far the best fish and chips for miles, and puts seaside restaurants to shame.

Count me in,

In something anyway, it might be italian, hopefully, but ill be up for it anyway.

A bit of drive, bite to eat other than crimbo fair (although i do love Christmas eating, believe it or not? :D!)

But a change of scenery and a bit of old Rufford ruin, clumber park, or maybe Boughton pump house?

Its all good, and im in

Hopefully I can make it over for this, might have to nick the wife's Fiat 500 to keep the Italian link going!

Hi, should be in with various family members, just need to discuss the seatbelt "issue" with her ladyship if coming in the Sud, or it may be a two car convoy... at least it is Italian!

See you all there

Chris

great stuff guys.

any preference on timings?
guessing a midday or thereabouts meet at the big fish is suitable for all?

we can then decide who wants to go where afterwards

as i said earlier, loads of great places for an afternoon stroll are within a half hour drive.

if the weather is crisp and dry it'll make a nice break from the turkey etc :)

Our dog sitter won't now be available on Monday so we won't be able to head over for this :-( We've just done the Crewe to Lincoln trip and a German Shepherd isn't too happy in the back of a Fiat 500! Hope you all have a good day though!

I'm compiling a race season summary for the race section so I will make more progress with that instead!

know rich (york sud) can't make it now too.

john & myself are available still but if the weather and issues with timings for folks mean a cancellation/postponement then so be it.

I was planning on turning up in the Spider, but unless the weather improves it will have to be the next time and besides a 160 mile ride with the top down may be just a little chilly.

we'll see how the weather is tomorrow then guys, still interest from us locals so guess that's a good enough excuse to get soem chips :D

fully understand anyone from further afield giving it a miss though guys, no need to travel out in foul weather and dodgy roads.

there will be other meets, in warm dry weather hopefully so those that are able to can get their tops down ;)

a weather update in the morning would be great mate, over here near the coast we're clear but if you still have snow over your way then maybe it's not good at ollerton either?

All the major roads, such as the a614 at ollerton are all fine, but the estate and side roads such as Chris's address,
still has some crunchy slippy stuff hanging around.

So long as we can get offnthe drives and turn a corner or two, we should be fine,

Hopefully :D

nice one mate ;)

just holla if the snow returns tonight, otherwise we'll aim to get there for about 12-30?

is that a good time for everyone that's till coming, 12-30?

doesn't matter to me if we have to have a natter for half hour first :D

I think I will probably give it a miss chaps as the roads around here are crap, we had about 4" of snow on the day it all fell but non of it has gone really, the side roads are smooth ice now and some main roads are clear but some not because there has been little traffic on them since boxing day and temperature hasn't got above 1 deg. C all day again. My brother is a paramedic for east midland ambulance service, I spoke to him earlier, he said roads out towards Mansfield / blidworth / ollerton way are very bad with black ice on them & with no salt or grit on them  and he went out to a few accidents around the kig hill / ollerton area (amonst others!) yesterday which is close to where we are looking at meeting up, he has a 4wd response Volvo and he said even that was sliding about, I don't want to end up down a ditch or worse

kind of makes me wonder if it's worth venturing out now...

will see what the overnight weather reports are and see in the morning
