Dear all! Anyone ever tried to replace this seal with gearbox in the car? Or should I just remove the gearbox?
Mine alas is leaking following its winter slumber..

No need to remove the gearbox as It’s quite easy to replace the seal with it in the car.

Thanks Lou, will jack it up tomorrow and have an investigate... annoyingly I had gearbox and engine out a year or 2 ago... but has only started leaking since I changed gearbox oil...it had a minor drip... has had that for years... but seems new oil while improving gear change has also increased rate of leak.
Still I have time on my hands....

The hardest part is removing the little roll pin that holds the selector quadrant on to the shaft a good pin punch usually get the job done

I meant to say it can be a bugger to get at due to the angle of the fadangle
But it is possible.

Yep I know the pin you speak of as I fitted a new one when the box was out.
as I say it's annoying as I had the box out...
I will get under there this am and take a look.
I have a spare gearbox and am going to take a look at what's involved to replace the output flange seals... still it's not all bad.. it started up a treat and is running well. After winter slumber Just old cars !

Well it's done..... however... on mine the angle of the dangle means drilling a 6mm hole to allow access for the punch in the gearbox tail stock...... or gearbox out...... no straight line of sight for the punch otherwise....
Exhaust had to come down too... bigger bore green clover leaf manifold made it just too tight .... you could see everything but couldn't get to it..... and then the seal took an age to come loose.... still fingers crossed we are ok moving forward.
As a side thought.... has anyone got the tools needed to replace the gearbox output shaft seals? I know the flanges and bearings come out easy enough.... but the tools to disassemble?

Pete has got me thinking. Has anyone seen or got any of the larger bore green clover leaf manifolds for sale?

Imasaf still list the sprint /sud cloverleaf exhaust manifold on their website?

I’m about to try and replace the gear selector input shaft oil seal, think i may have a problem accessing the roll pin as well! But how do you remove the oil seal with the selector shaft still in place? I take it that i the shaft doesn’t pull out?

Anybody?

Carefully drill a small hole in the seal, partly screw in a self tapper, and gripping the screw head with pliers pull out the seal.

Ok, thanks John. It’s going to be tight…not much room and the seal is quite small.

I would advise caution... I scratched the gearchange shaft changing mine in situe....
So my oil leak continued..... I ended up overhauling a spare green cloverleaf box I have had kicking around for 20 years or so and fitting that.... removing the end cover is a much safer way to replace the seal... but means alot more dismantling of course.
I resealed the replacement before it went in...replaced the tail stock bushes...rear crank seal.... gear change bushes..... and its a different car to drive now...... although now its highlighting the worn outer CV joints....
Anyone found a supplier of sud outer CVs???
