Rear Alfasud brake disc, nothing available

Good evening gents,

What are you guys doing with your rear brake discs? The decent Brembo discs with the numbers 08.2163.08 (disc without wheel bearing), 08.2163.10 (same disc with wheel bearing), 08.2163.18 (disc without wheel bearing), 08.2163.20 (same disc with wheel bearing). All these variants of the discs can be widely found throughout the Internet however nowhere they are available. I ordered some of these discs in Germany because the Web Shop stated that although not on stock the availability would be withing 3-5 working days. In the end after many annoying e-mails the proposal from the shop is to provide the more expensive and (in my opinion) poor quality NK discs. Quite irritated after this mishap.

How do you guys deal with the rear brake disc matter? Where do you get them and do you have any recommendation for alternatives for the Brembo ones? Good or bad experiences with such etcetera. Please remember I'm not a millionaire though ;-)

BUMP!

Its been a little while since this one went up, and its a fairly important issue too in my opinion,

any ideas or findings on rear discs chaps?

my only other suggestions for the future would be to use the original hub, turned down, as a bell to mount a more widely available disc to, but it would be a fair bit of engineering and cost for a simple issue really.

Im wondering if they're more readily available in Italy.

when I needed some for the last S1 sud I did I couldn't find them anywhere in the UK, all the motor factors I tried rang all their own suppliers but despite them having good part numbers the stock wasn't available from anyone so assuming that there is a limited number of manufacturers in the country which between all the usual suspects of motor factors I called would cover all companies who could have got some then it's fair to assume no new stock available... :(

don't rule out getting them skimmed, not much call for it nowadays as new parts are much more readily available generally than they used to be so skimming became uneconomical but as they usually don't wear too thin then a little skim can bring them back to usefulness

It seems the "NK" discs are the only available option. I called many shops and tried many websites, but nothing decent available. Through Amazon Germany I managed to get my hands on a set Brembo discs with the number 08.2163.10 (after 1982 discs).

Of course I was aiming for the 08.2163.08 (before 1982 discs), but those were simply impossible to find. Every now and then you still find some discs on E-Bay, but those are more or less like the renowned "hen's teeth" and expensive when it comes to shipping due to their weight.

I guess this will become a bigger issue for people trying to get their Sud back in factory spec. in the near future. Too bad that no other makers than the doubtful NK (personal opinion) put their effort in making these parts.

Hello,

May I suggest you type "Alfasud dischi freno posteriore per la vendita" into Google.

I wish I was that smart but I have to use Babelfish to find search phrases in Italian, German and French.

All the best,
Simon

Good find Marlow Sud, Ferodo is also a decent brand. I suppose these discs are not shown in the accompanying picture ;-)

I assume these are also the after 1982 type discs. Not sure about the difference between pre 1982 discs and post 1982? Wheel bearing perhaps?

The picture is just a generic photo, but once you're into the body of the advert there is a much more sud resembling diagram.

Ferodo should be up to the job too :P

Hi Guys,

Can you Sud Meisters confirm if the earlier rear discs have different size bearings to the later ones?
I thought the bearings were the same?
I do remember the bearing dust caps for the early ones are smaller diameter though by about 1mm dia.
I had to get larger dust caps when I bought replacement discs.
Brgds,
Simon

As far as I know all bearings are the same across the range of rear discs.
There are 2 different bearing cap diameters as has been mentioned.
From what details I can find there was also 2 differing heights of disc, not the diameter (which is again the same across all variants) but the height from front face where wheel bolts to the back of the brake disc surface.
Either 78mm or 82mm.
This would also explain why the discs I found for the S1 car appeared to bias to one side of the caliper more than the other...

If those are available then worth a try. At worst then a pair of bearing caps will need sourcing, something I found easy enough off ebay.

Acouple of weeks ago i contacted by email a brake disc manufacturer in the uK, to enquire about manufacturing a batch. Unsurprisingly i have heard nought.

Difference between pre and post 1982 discs is only the height of the centering ring, also the centering ring is machined a little different requiring different caps but both discs should be fine on all Suds unless you have a really weird wheel.
It is nice that Brembo put photos of the actual discs with the visible difference in their catalogue.

Thanks bert308 for the input. I downloaded the data sheets from the Brembo website an the only difference I could find was indeed the centre cap, but I was wondering whether I was missing something, but it seems not

this is exactly what I came up against, people advertise them assuming they can place an order with the manufacturer.... you then place an order only to be told they can't supply!!

That was indeed the reason for me to start this thread. It appears that I'm not the only one experiencing this issue. In the mean time I found a shop on Amazon Germany which had one of the Brembo ".10" discs on stock. It was the last set they had. It seems that all others advertising these parts don't have any.

KevJTD, I've had this issue now twice when ordering the parts that in the end they were not available. What's a bit doubtful about the link you added (besides the rediculous generic picture that has no relation at all to the offered product) is the note that it's for ABS vehicles. So far I haven't encountered ABS Sud's yet ;-) There's no brand of the discs stated, maybe you will receive the NK ones when you order them?

Maybe a stupid question, but is it worth trying a group buy? Get enough peaople to comit to buy, 2 sets each if necessary and see if anyone will make a run of them?

i couldn't be included as I no longer have the sud :(

Not wishing to gloat, but I got the last pair of new original Alfa Romeo rear discs with bearings from their current stock from myalfa.com for my Sprint restoration. They were €85.00 but they tell me that they'll be getting more in 'soon'.

It's worth noting though that the stated interchange part for the Alfa Romeo originals (AR part number 795035) by Brake Engineering is 952890 so it seems that Kev's link to eBay might well get you a new shiny pair of rear discs for your Alfasud for much cheaper than the AR originals but - and it's a big but - the AR originals are 233mm dia and the Brake Engineering ones are said to be 240mm dia so who knows?

However, a much safer bet are alfa-service.com who have rear discs in stock for all models listed at €62.00 each or go for EBC Brakes D176 on eBay at £128.83 for a pair:
