Thanks Keith - that's the fella!

Looks like an in-line V8. 5-valve heads, and I think desmodromic valves...

I knew it was a Deltic diesel too, but everyone beat me to it!

The concept is just so utterly bonkers, I love it! 3 crankshafts, with horizontally-opposed cylinders compressing the mixture. It's a boxer!

And I love 2-stroke diesels, they sound like they are revving to 8,000 rpm!

I never knew the Deltic was developed for naval use though - always thought it was intended for the rails right from the start...

Oh dear, I am in too deep. :?
Way too technical for me
Anyone seen the youtube clip of the building of the w12 Rolls Royce engine? How does that work?
On second thoughts, don't try and explain.

Good grief!

That's pretty cryptic, and in a state too!

Is it, or was it, aeronautical?

Pre-War Auto Union or Mercedes? They were pretty much a WWII fighter without wings so it could easily be from a fighter!

Knowing Kev, I'd have plummed for something like a merlin myself too, but, that displaced cylinder and its position is confusing me big time!

How about a little clue mate?

Please! :)

yes, it's a merlin 8-)

the piston that looks out of place is some kind of pump that sits at the top/back of the engine.

this one is from a crashed spitfire......

been on our yearly visit to east kirkby aviation centre tonight for the lancaster taxy run & fireworks. awesome display from both

Loved to have seen all three together.

Nice Lightening Pics mate :)

Which is my favourite Aircraft of all time, memories as a kid watching them at Finningley in the 70's with my Dad & Grandad :)
I used to work at Rolls Royce in Derby and there was an ex FAF bloke there who worked on them back in the day as an airframe fitter, he showed me a photo of a 5-a-breast take off out in the middle east somewhere, hard to imagine that now....
Apparently everyone at the time loved them but hated working on them due to everything being accessed through little access panels and the need to remove multiple sub assemblies to get to the problem, it took many many man hours to accomplish even some maintenance jobs which meant hundreds of fitters and Electricians just to keep a handful of Lightenings in Service

I believe that fellow Nova owner Ed Straw (ex RAF Battle of Britain flight) now does the taxi runs at East Kirkby. Of course, he may share taxi duties with other pilots...

He may have been the pilot when I went in it. He commented that "Just Jane" was in better condition than the BBMF Lanc !!

John, you are on the right track, it is Zagato bodied.
