Hi Kev. Loving the thread and all the great work going into your car.
The Ti series 1 and 2 grilles definitely had satin black painted centres with just the outer edge and badge surround being left in chrome finish. I have purchased two NOS grilles over the past 5 years from a dealer I know in Italy. Both came in Alfa Ricambi orange plastic wrapping and were still sealed, just as they left the factory. Hope this helps!

Hi Kev,
Re the grille. Looks like your question about the pillar Ti badges, early ones without badges seem to have all chrome grille, but later ones seem to have black cross bars. My S reg 5m had all chrome, but perhaps the Ti went black to make it look more racy!
Cheers
Ian

I had a look at the Ti S1 brochures and press pack I have. The red car shown in the Nov 73 launch photos had an all chrome saloon type grille. The early brochures show the same launch photos with the all chrome grille. However all the road test cars in Motor, Autocar, What Car etc. from 1974 onwards until the series 3 launched in 1980 all show cars with the black centre to the grille. Also, the 1976 combined brochure for the 5M and Ti models shows the Ti with the black centre to the grille along with the C pillar stickers that were introduced at the same time as the small chrome Ti badge was removed from the boot lid.

thanks mate, kind of confirms what i/we suspected so at least I feel i've done the right think it painting the bars satin black.
i have the rear 1/4 pillar ti stickers and no boot badge so all seems correct.
took the time last night to rub down the grille so I could paint it too. wasn't too bad but once the new paint was on the centre heart it made the rest look shabby.
wish I hadn't felt the need to do it as it was a real PITA to sand in each individual slat with a scotch pad. took well over an hour just to sand it
primed it last night, should topcaot it tomorrow afternoon while the ambient temp is slightly higher than tonight........although i brought some bigger boxes home tonight so I can make a wider oven especially to paint the grille......

Saw on Facebook a very nice green 'R' reg S1 Sud Ti on display at Vospers Alfa dealership over the weekend - should be a good reference for you Kev - has black slatted Grille - looks mint too, and I don't just mean the colour!

couldn't agree more, looks an absolute gem.

to answer chris in a bit more depth, no pics of late mate. not a great deal more done really. some bits gone on, some bits refurbed, some days off with manflu
finally found someone who can replace my broken sunroof visor, or blade as it's seems to be called, without it being an arm & a leg job. should get that back soon, i hope...did you know that my folding roof is a webasto, but brits may also recognise it being a britax one. a webasto britax one apparently....

Looks nice Kev, I have decided to black the centre of mine as well.
We will all look the same then.
Like I said, my original was smashed when I got the car and didn't take much notice when I got a second hand replacement. I was more concerned as to the condition of the chrome.

it will be done for easter with a bit of luck mate.
easter weekend next year is april 3rd to 5th
the car will be complete by end of feb but for the roof lining which is booked in for march, but i know how that can easily get put back a bit by outside forces so still can't be 100% sure.
plan to have a week off work in feb, if needed, to get the car ready for just the roof lining and interior fitting to be the very last things to do
next year will be a full season of using it

no probs lauren
being a slave to originality on this car meant i just had to go with the original colour, not one i'd have chosen if given the choice to be honest, but it still looks ok. if the code had turned out to be a horrible battleship greay then that would have been a tough choice......

There could be a series 1 ti in almost every colour..?
Base green above, blue above, sure I've seen a metallic green being restored (?) , seen a white one, a couple of red ones, kegs salmon, Kev's silver and if Vecchio sticks to mustard yellow, and there is a lighter yellow on on the road somewhere.
Any colour missing?

had a look at john's mx-5 this afternoon, so had a bit of time spare when that was done.
decided that it was about time that the front spoiler was given a long awaited clean up.
it will need a few repairs before paint but first job was to get rid of years worth of underseal that had been sprayed up the back of it. with the spoiler being plastic i can only assume that it was overspray from the front panel being undersealed, even suds can't rot plastic!
messy job but it all got chipped off and cleaned, eventually

eventually both halves got cleaned on both sides. the front faces had been previously painted with hammerite over the original colour so again, it took some sanding off.
a few repairs to do to old splits which won't be too easy with the spoiler being so flexible.
