My new project, finally got my integrale.
Re: My new project, finally got my integrale.
Yes it was me we have been using at work for a few years now so see a few jobs come back in that it's been used on and it holds up very well
Re: My new project, finally got my integrale.
The waxoyl type stuff I use for cavaties is Tetroseal as sold to me by the paint suppliers, seems to do the job OK. Runny enough to not have to be heated, fogs lovely from a schutz gun, doesn't seem to dry out too bad at all as we used it at the VW place and saw them year on year.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tetrosyl-Carp ... XQyY1TQoJm
Like the idea of that Raptor stuff though for the underside, from what I can make out it's like a stoneguard type of coating that you can add your paint colour to so it saves having to overpaint, and nothing gets chipped off paint wise.
How do you use it Simon? Etch the bare parts/all of it then spray over that with your paint mixed in?

Yes Etch primer seal seams then spray raptor on through a schutz gun we use the disposable plastic ones
Finish is much like spray sealer but already body colour and it's good sound deadening I sprayed in side of my roof to stop flex and noise much like a sound deadening pad also inside on floors is also sprayed the same expensive but saves sound deadening pads

Re: My new project, finally got my integrale.
The passenger side reinforcement bracket at the suspension arm mount looked crusty, certainly too bad to leave alone.
Wasn't actually too bad underneath the reinforcement bracket but still, whilst at it best to renew
Thickish plate made up and welded into place
Bottom half of the reinforce was declared unfit so I made a new half from some 3mm steel, in hindsight making it fully from the new steel would have been neater but it's now all strong and you'll never see it all once it's covered by the steering rack so happy enough.

Just about done with the front end now.
Next time I'll box in the wheel arch corner then move onto the back end.
Been looking at it this afternoon, loads of it will be so much easier with the car on the spit so I'll repair the floors near the bumper mounts then get all the weight out of it and get it on the tilter, should feel like a big step on then.

That looks well executed and solid. Half of what looks odd to the restorers eye disappears under the first coat of paint.

Thought you guys would be interested in this, after what we were talking about.
I took these today.
It is a show piece and paint will not cover anything as I have to do the whole thing in clear lacquer. Amazing engineering and I just love all the perfect bits fitting where they should. No rust , perfect fit and welds. Wouldn't you love a Sud and Sprint like this?

I will get a picture when it is finished. I am doing the outside tomorrow, then the front wings and tail gate. Still waiting for a bonnet.
It is grey scotch brite all over , and lots of de-greasing. I did a sample of matt lacquer as well but the customer decided full gloss. I didn't do all the polishing, just where it had a few marks.
Any guess to what it is?

I like the way the gloss shows the endless curves and bends in the metal. Makes it industrial art.

Well , glad it is of some interest and I am not the only one who finds the shapes and contours interesting. Not your everyday sort of job.
In 30 years working in the repair trade, I have painted body shells before, but not like this.
Did the outside yesterday and when it is all de-masked and together I will do some final photos.
I still can not believe it is what the guy tells me it is
and as far as I know, it is not RWD Kev, but I see your thinking and maybe a 4WD version is on the cards. It is Japanese.
Here is a few more. (Sorry to crash your thread Kev, should have put it in the puzzle post)

Re: My new project, finally got my integrale.
OK, back to Lancia rust and away from the new Nissan steel
Last bit of the passenger inner arch got welded up this afternoon.
There are still a few small bits to do but I've hatched a plan now to get the car on the rollover jig to do the rest, now it's in a pretty solid condition at last and able to support its' own weight!
So I made a start on getting the rear end stripped down.
The fuel filler/expansion bottle thingy was hiding a few more holes, what a surprise!
The inner arch I knew was pretty grotty, rusted but also covered in thick gooey underseal. Once all removed it allowed good inspection of the tyre and shocker through the rear light opening!
There was some kind of sheet material that had been stuffed up there and I guess trying to stop the water from getting in.

Re: My new project, finally got my integrale.
As the idea is to get all the weight out of it the rear axle assembly needs to come off. With the car on it's wheels that meant it needed to be on some axle stands on the newly repaired jacking points, well done a while back not exactly newly done!
With axle stands I don't like the idea they can slide off. If the car is low enough I can use my pin system, but I need plenty of height so couldn't use that system.
So a bit of folded 3mm steel and hey presto, no chance of the car slipping off the platforms
With the car now safely jacked up high the whole rear assembly could come out, thankfully without too much drama
Now it's all out I got the chance to have a better look at what I have left to do. Amazingly I didn't find a thing I hadn't already seen! All hidden areas are pretty solid, brilliant
View from under the drivers side behind the wheelarch, the fur is from where our cat used to climb inside the car at night!
And the passenger side doesn't look much more encouraging
I know it looks bad but honestly it's no worse than I expected, and better than I dared hope for. Inspiration renewed, I'll get on with it again next week.

I bet your welding rods come in a box marked "Magic Wands".
Re: My new project, finally got my integrale.
Kev, do you think the suspension tops had been replaced at some point as the plating looks mint.
Glad to here you are not fazed by it, that sure is a project.

Re: My new project, finally got my integrale.
Got over the phase of being daunted by it now, the Imp and previous cars have taught me that anything is possible, it's just a PITA to do!
Just concentrate on getting sections done at a time really. All the while I've been doing the front end I've barely thought about the rear turrets that are pretty much fully floating, if you start to think about it all you'd go mad with anxiety!
Actually quite looking forward to getting at it, a big step will be overcome once the back end is sorted, just the 'screen scuttle to change then and we're not a million miles from being done with the welder. Sounds simple but that's a good while off yet..
Don't think the turrets have been changed Keith although to be honest I've yet to look too close, must say I was relieved that when the struts came down they didn't take the towers with them! The rear strut tops have been changed before I think but otherwise I think it's as was.
Wish I did have some magic wands Tony, be much simpler

Early finish tonight, the Mrs birthday so just updating before we go out, out for a meal! Get me, worlds best Husband
maybe not!
Anyway, rear axle all stripped down now, some seized bolts into the mounting brackets encased in alloy, glad to say that they all came out without wrecking the rear diff housing!
Worse though, the rear carrier will probably be no good
Stripped the rest of the wiring back from the rear end so I can get better access to the suspension turrets ready for chopping next visit, had a bit of a scrape back to see if any shiny metal could be found, luckily it hasn't crept in too far although there will be a few fresh air gaps to fill in.
View from the rear arch looking towards where an inner arch should be
Not a great deal of progress it may seem but a day of the fiddly stuff that needed doing, got a boot full of parts back home now so no excuses this winter for something to do
