If you need it mate, Autosupplies Netherfield Nottingham can repair most alternators, starters, solenoids etc etc
I can always get it to them for you if the other one doesnt work

all sorted mate thanks
replacement regulator i found was given clean bill of health, all charging nicely.
so thought i'd give them the go ahead to strip the alternator down anyway and refurbish it, new bearings & brushes etc have been fitted. all ready for collection so will get it tomorrow.
hopefully should see me alright for another 10 years

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
spent the weeks evenings sorting a few parts out so i've more stuff to fit on at the weekend.
side repeater indicators ready to go, lucky enough to have one brand new one plus some decent ones to sort the best from.
cigarette lighter socket cleaned and new terminals fitted.
exhaust heat shroud for the air filter needed some repairs as was only about 75% complete but ready for fitting now

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
i also found the right combination of parts to make up a decent wiper motor & linkage.
most sets have badly worn wiper spindles by now being in plastic housings but finally i found a decent pair.
even though the spindles were free from any play it is crucial for the long term life to strip them down and grease it for the long term lastign ability.
here's a few simple steps that you can do on your own to prevent future failings.
once the linkage is off the car then heres how it comes apart.
the splined part where the wiper arms mount is just an interference fit so can be punched out, knock the spindle out through the hole
once this is through then the clean up can start. i use red rubber grease on parts like this as it won't degrade the plastic parts.
the linkages are held together by E clips, pull these out and the plastic bushes can be removed and cleaned then packed with the rubber grease.

you can see the difference here between a good plastic sleeve guide for the spindle and a fairly well worn one, i have seen worse though!

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
ready to fit complete linkage & motor. notice the wiring on these older motors how the blue/black trace wire isn't a line like the newer stuff but a series of dots. hope that didn't have to be done by hand
the new terminals are best off soldered as well as crimped as the heat travels down the wires and terminal which melts the outer coating of the wire and bonds it to the crimp of the terminal making it doubly difficult for a wire to pull out as well as sealing it a bit more
thankfully i'm getting short of things to change the terminals on

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
good afternoon really.
quite a few bits tidied up.
new horns fitted and wired in
front indicators wired in
front side repeaters fitted and wired in
wiper linkage fitted
battery clamped in properly
refurbished alternator & regulator fitted
n/s steering arm removed so i could route wires correctly
drivers seat base fitted
exhaust heat riser fitted
reverse light wiring fitted
cigarette lighter socket fitted, and working
dark afternoons aren't a big help though, but at least the lights work.
this is just sidelights, proving that good wiring/new terminals & good earths are the only way to go
i have just got the rear number plate lamp to wire in then we are getting somewhere with the wiring, at last!
after having several discusions with myself i was convinced that making a hole in the back panel for the wiring to the number plate was neccesary i hate drilling holes after something has been painted but no way round it unless i ran wires through the bumper mounts which would bring it's own problems.
happy with the afternoons work, great to be able to put a few things on in one go
hopefully a few shows will be on the cards next year, not sure about any concours event bluesuit, but we will see

That's a good tick list done there Kev, I know what you mean about drilling holes after the job is painted, this shows where my wire hole was if you need an idea.
Good feeling when you can put the lights on.

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
All that crimping and soldering has paid off handsomely - lovely crisp white sidelights, are you using halogens?

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
cheers guys.
yes, the work on the loom has paid off lauren, a pita to do but worth it.
lights are just stock items, ordinary H1 bulbs in main & dips, stock bulbs in sidelights, nothing fancy.
not been up the road yet to check out light performance but even parked on my drive they seem to work pretty well.
i'm convinced that chopping out any dead wiring that has turned black, fitting decent terminals, making good earths etc is all that's needed to get good lights..........time will tell

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
sorted a couple of water leaks out this afternoon with johns help, trying in vain to keep me sane!
flushed the cooling system through 3 times with distilled water to flush out all the old stuff, refilled with blue anti-freeze/distllied water mix.
did manage to get the refurbed air filter housing back on before packing the car away again.
i really hate this time of year with only 3 hours or so of useable time a week, my saturday afternoons are very short with the dark evenings. having to pack it away off ym drive every night is a royal pain, i do envy you guys with a proper garage to work in

doing my head in at the moment mate, 2 steps forward one step back it seems. not that stuff is going wrong as such, just that i can never get any time on it at this time of year. 2 or 3 hours a week at most. just got to try and prep stuff in the week to bolt on but that doesn't always go to plan as you find you need extra bits...
i just know the next few months will slip away and it will be spring and i'm still faffing around with it

I know what your saying about this time of year. I wanted to get more done today........I finished work at 6am went to bed until then fitted tow bar on the 145 20vt and wired it up after that it wasn't worth doing anything else as it was starting to get dark
Re: My S1 Sud Ti
Know what you mean about not having a decent garage, but what you have achieved under the conditions is unbelievable, can you rig up some lighting to give you more time?

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
2 steps forward, 1 step back......or is it the other way around
i've taken the decision that my attempt at making a head liner was just pants, some parts were ok but overal it's just not good enough.
so tonight a trimmer came around to have a look and has quoted me to replace it all with a complete fresh one made by him. not only that but the webasto roof will be stripped right down, new liner made for the inside face in the same material as the roof liner to match (is like chalk & cheese at the moment ) plus the outer vinyl covering will get replaced for new material.
quite an expense but the only thing to do.
will mean some backward steps in that the glass will have to come out again but in the longrun it will be worth it.
pencilled in for early march as the guy is in high demand and booked up into feb at the moment.
no qualms about how good his work is, 7 figure restorations are what he usually gets involved with.....i've seen them, so should be a tad better than my efforts
