1.5 8v cam timing

Post by Harry_p »

Hello all,

A so have a few longer journeys planned for my ‘sud this year, and as I hadn’t changed the belts since buying it 4.5 years ago I thought I would change the timing belts.

It went ok, waterpump was rather reluctant to come out, but we got there…

Anyway, I was a little lazy when doing it, I didn’t want to remove the cam covers for fear of introducing a leak which wasn’t already there. I put a small mark on the cam pulley instead.

The left side I was happy with, the right I wasn’t confident so removed the cover anyway and double checked the marks.

Put it together, have been for a little test run and it seems a touch lumpier than I remembered. Have taken the covers off and these are the marks.

Flywheel bang on the T, right side perfectly on the mark, the left side looks a bit off, but I’m not sure it can be a whole tooth out?? In my head a tooth out would be a bigger gap than that, it’s kind of in a no-man’s land.

How does it look to those with more experience? It’s a lot more awkward to check and adjust now it’s all back together!

The more I look, the more I think it’s a tooth out. Obviously the pulley is a lot bigger than that journal so a whole tooth out at the pulley will be a smaller distance at the cam.

Thank you, yes it was.

Serves me right for taking shortcuts. Wasn’t too bad to reset it, all lines up perfectly now and it seems no harm done.

Was hoping to check the ignition timing too, but seems my timing light has gone dim and I can’t see the marks in daylight.

Annoying as I’ve only used it a couple of times.

Timing guns….. so fragile they seem to stop working when faced with practically anything. My gunson one of over 30 years fried last weekend - I took very good care of it but I think the pick up got too hot down in the engine bay on no.1 lead. I got a cheap red acuspark one off Amazon ( s800 I think) and it’s been fine. Not expecting it to last too long though.

Very annoying, badly used and been gentle with it.

Looks like they’ve doubled in price in the four years or so I’ve had mine!

I can apparently buy a new lamp for it for about £10 so I think that’s worth a try first. It does seem to work, it’s just very dull.
