My S1 Sud Ti

Post by KevJTD »

This is the car that I longed for, way before even going through the marathon resto on VJM.
Luckily for me the hard work has already been done.

Years I've searched and as with these things one was on my doorstep.

A change of workplace led me to start with a local garage who had a customer with Alfa's, just the ticket! Anyway after some time John and me got chatting about Alfas and Suds in general and he casually mentioned (as he does, I've since found out) that he has an S1 Ti tucked away and would I be interested in it......of course I would!
Time went by and then he came back to me to say that he'd changed his mind and would finish it off himself. Disapointed but understanding.
At least I knew of another Sud locally.

Anyway time went by and about a year later he offered it to me again....didn't take much to think about it, I had to at least see the car.
Now, when I went to see it I was really hoping it'd be a basket case. That way I could justify leaving it alone and keeping my track day 16V, I do seem to collect cars but 2 Suds would be pushing things!
What greeted me though just blew me away. The car looked just about ready to put back together, hardly any work at all!

These are a few of the shots I took on that day.

Gold dust. 8-)

the car is in superb condition having been restored to this stage about 5 years ago. many new panels were sourced and fitted.
not that much for me to do really!

once home i got it on the rollover jig to have a poke around underneath, see if there was much to do.

usual scabby bits around the jacking points and a repair or 2 on the floor but overall in superb condition, nothing much to see 8-)

it certainly was a lucky turn of events that eh mate?

credit to John and co for the work to this stage for sure, but if you had an Alfa without any of your welding, would it ever feel like your own? ha ha!!

yes guys, can't wait to get started properly on the S1.

some more pics from before christmas when i tidied up the underside.

check out the inner rear arches, see what i mean about all the hard work already been done?

still found some of the dreaded foam under the jacking points though! needless to say it's all been dug out.

if anyone is wondering about if the rollover jigs are worth the investment just look at the pic, how easy do you want it to be to weld a floor, sill or jacking point? 8-)

I'm thinking of adapting mine (Thanks H!) with a couple of front to back steel rails, with solid castors on it too.

be great to have it rotating, and wheel'able around the workshop too i reckon?

on a slightly related note, i bought myself a new Super Heavy Duty Engine stand last week, but upon arriving and un-boxing, i really didn't like the look of some of it. Its made of nice gauge steel, and a nice design, but welded by a monkey and then some vital junctions and joints are simply bolted together.

its would probably do it, but i'm not risking anything, so ive spent a few evenings with some nice crackling amps, re-welding what i didn't like the look of and welding all the bolt together joints up to. NOW it will do the 1500lb weight specified with ease! plus, i shotblasted it today aswell so it can all get a proper coating soon, and look all pretty and professional! aaahhh!

and related to this related note! as the boxer lads will know, a standard engine stand isn't at all effective for our opposing layout, there simply isn't the fixings available, so i've also been building something of a replica of Kevs engine cradle adaptor to use on Harveys lump soon too. Just a couple of 45's for reinforcing and that too will be ready for some powder coating, but it might have to wait to get pretty, needs to be useable at first opportunity really,

doesn't it H? ;)

found this pic of the day my sud came home.
shrew and john will testify to the complete farce that i organised as a means to getting it home
the drama in getting it onto the trailer was only beaten by my enthusiasm for getting it home. looks handy perched up there doesn't it!
my short lived but fantastic to drive 166 3.0 was used for the towing. a truly great and under-rated car. if it wasn't for the tiny eyes on the front they'd be an awesome car, later improved by the facelift.

as spring is around the corner, clocks change this weekend don't forget so that's an extra hour of daylight at nights ;) , it's perfect timing that my own sud will be coming out of a winters' slumber this weekend in preperation for a trip to the paintshop next week.

hope to make some progress at last.

yes guys, hoping it will start to come together at a pcae now although the next stage takes a huge amount of time too, all the parts that will need cleaning and refurbishing along the way

but with the light nights and dry (er) days things should start moving nicely.

car went for a ride out tonight............

managed to still forget a couple of items that i could have sorted over the winter

great planning on my part as usual

first off the car doesn't currently have a fuel flap, hadn't since bringing it home some months back. of course it wasn't until last night that i thought about getting it on the car....but couldn't find it in the shed.
fingers crosse one will turn up on saturday when john and myself pop up to the stock pile.....

i need to get one before the paint goes on as being done in the original shade of metallic nisida grey (silver really) i can't take the risk of having one sprayed at a later date as it isn't the best colour to match in, especially a prt so prominent.

so i may be on the scrounge for an S1 fuel flap. a text from richard got my hopes up that i was mistaken about the S1 flap being different to the S3 ones (notch at the back edge) but alas on checking brochure pics tonight it confirms they are different......anyone?

i did though find the outer handle for the boot, albeit covered in hammerite and years of layers of differing paints.
drilled the old rivets out, knotted wire wheel to get rid of the paint and bigger pieces of rust on the underside.
still had sunk in corrosion in the pitted bits though so a quick blast with the gritblaster and it was all good aagin.
etch primed it so it's ok to go to the painters on monday.

fingers crossed on the fuel flap.....

earlier than expected, the missing fuel flap issue has been resolved.
john came up trumps again and actually looked through the parts haul a day early, thanks again mate 8-)

seeing as it was to hand it'd be rude not to take the old paint off and prep it ready for the paintshop.

who says '70's alfas' rust? this flap is in great condition!

more in-depth and interesting posts will follow in the weeks to come, but i'm too keen on getting started to not post the little jobs :D

went to see the sud today at the bodyshop armed withmy camera.

must say i'm impressed with their attitude to it. they didn't want to do a quick job and leave any shallow dents, even some i'd not noticed like one gutter edge slightly twisted, so was very pleased to see how well they are getting on.

very hopeful that it's going to be a great job done.

shame i forgot to take any pics in the excitment though.................

looking mighty fine prep so far, but lets be honest, it was as good a start point for them already as they could hope for too.

that said, what they found and corrected so far was worth doing, and the promise of it looking like glass, a promise i know they can deliver too, sound gorgeous!

I can't, John can't wait, so god knows how excited you must be!
