Guys, I admit defeat. I've turned the engine over to put new cambelts on before, but with the engine out of the car.
So how on earth do you get a spanner on the crank nut to turn the engine over with the engine in the car? Can't get anything down there with the radiator there? There's no room.
So guys, what's the secret? Any tips? Any idea even what size the spanner/socket is required?

Good point, yes possibly got enough room in the garage if I'm somewhere near tdc. Just can't believe there's no other way. Perhaps I need an offset ring spanner....but what size...32mm? Anyone know?

Ah ha. Managed to get a socket on it coming in from under the radiator - it's 30mm. No room to get a socket wrench on though, so guess that a 30mm offset ring spanner should just squeeze on there....eBay I think. Will keep you informed of progress.

In gear with one wheel jacked up turn the raised wheel will work

Take the plugs out, and turn the crank pulley by hand....with a pair of gloves on!

Take the plugs out and put a spanner on the nut at the front of the alternator. If the alternator belt slips just apply a bit of pressure to the belt and it will grip.

I did try that one and yes it did slip. Didn't want to put further pressure on it, but if someone's tried it and it works then I'll definitely give it a go this weekend.
