Gearbox foam support

Post by Sprint88qv »

Evening all,

Just about to put the engine & box back in my 88 Sprint, and just looking at the oil stained and beaten up piece of foam that sits between the top of the transmission tunnel and the top of the gear change linkage (see attached). I’m presuming there are no replacements out there and now just wondering if this is the source of the odd fume whiff I get inside the cabin once the car has been running for a while i,e saturated oil stains heating up above the hot exhaust…..

so, question is….is it definitely required? Do people out there just chuck it away and replace it with a new piece of fire retardant foam? Or does everyone just carry on with it, despite its condition?

Just interested.

Cheers.

I've always presumed that its purpose was noise suppression, and earlier cars had a much thinner piece of foam here, - wash it ?? I would put it back, just to keep the noise down, - I've one or two of these, but not as clean as yours !
Cheers, John.

Cheers John.

I’m being too picky then if your spare ones are much worse than mine.

Right, a quick scrub up and in it goes then.
